Geography

Geography

At St Mary’s we teach Geography through a topic based approach to develop children’s understanding of places and environments. We seek to study how people respond to their environment and how people affect the environment. Through a growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world, and enables them to recognise the importance of sustainable development for the future of the environment.

Our aims are:

  • To develop an enquiring approach.
  • To use geographical enquiry skills to develop knowledge and understanding of place.
  • To develop children’s sense of responsibility in caring for the Earth and encourage a commitment to sustainable development.
  • To acquire knowledge and understanding about physical and human processes.
  • To develop awareness and appreciation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of society.
  • To acquire knowledge of geographical language, concepts and skills, including location of places and how to use, draw and interpret maps.
