Religious Education (RE)

RE

At St Mary’s we believe that Religious Education (RE) must be varied, interesting, relevant, stimulating and challenging. We have endeavoured to organise an exciting and challenging scheme of work in RE to offer a range of teaching and learning strategies.

Based upon topics developed by the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education, our scheme of work is predominately Christian. We aim to ensure that children can learn about Jesus’ life and teaching, explore Old and New Testament bible stories and characters, learn about our local church; its functions and traditions, and appreciate and embrace Christian values.

Children also learn about other world religions: Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism and Hinduism, and are given the opportunity to visit these places of worship.

In RE at our school we aim to help children to: –

  1. Acquire and develop a sound knowledge and understanding of Christianity.
  2. Acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the other principal religions represented in the United Kingdom.
  3. Develop an understanding of the influence of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures.
  4. Develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues, with reference to the teachings of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in the United Kingdom.
  5. Enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development by:- a) Developing awareness of the fundamental questions of life raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them. b) Responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions, and to their own understanding and experience. c) Reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.
  6. Develop a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold different beliefs from their own, and towards living in a society of many religions.

Our Scheme of Work in RE has been developed to achieve these aims. By following this scheme of work we aim to ensure continuity and progression in RE throughout the whole school.
